Glossary
Spanish insurance terms, translated
Carencia — waiting period
The period after you take out a policy before certain treatments or benefits are covered. Health policies for visa applications normally need to have no waiting periods.
Copago — co-payment
A small fee you pay each time you use a medical service. Consulates usually require health insurance without co-payments for residency visas.
Franquicia — excess
The part of each claim you pay yourself. Choosing a higher excess lowers your premium, especially in car and home insurance.
Continente / Contenido — buildings / contents
Continente covers the structure of the property — walls, roof and fixed installations. Contenido covers your furniture, belongings and appliances.
Tomador, asegurado y beneficiario — who’s who
The policyholder signs and pays, the insured person is the one covered, and the beneficiary receives the payout. They can be three different people.
Decesos — funeral insurance
A very common Spanish policy that pays for and organises the funeral and all the paperwork, so your family doesn’t have to — with repatriation options for foreign residents.
Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros — catastrophe cover
The state-backed body that pays for damage caused by extraordinary events, such as floods, earthquakes or exceptional storms, through your existing home or car policy.
Infraseguro — underinsurance
When the sum insured is lower than the real value of what you insure. After a claim, the payout is reduced proportionally — so review your values regularly.
