Is health insurance compulsory for a Spanish student visa?
Yes. Every non-EU student applying for a stay authorisation for studies must provide proof of public or private health insurance taken out with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain. Without it, the visa application is refused.
Will any health insurance policy do?
No. It has to cover all the risks covered by the Spanish public system, with no co-payments, no waiting periods and no cover limits, and be valid for the whole of your stay authorisation. Travel insurance, or a policy with co-payments, does not meet the requirements.
Does the policy have waiting periods?
Not for the medical covers. The certificate you present at the consulate lists every cover with the waiting period “None” beside it: A&E, specialists, lab tests, imaging, hospital stays, surgery, ICU, ambulance and dental. The only exception is childbirth, with the 8-month waiting period that is standard in the sector.
Can I arrange it from my own country, before travelling to Spain?
Yes. The whole process is remote. You send us your passport and acceptance letter by WhatsApp or email, and you receive the certificate by email without having set foot in Spain.
Do I need an NIE or a Spanish bank account?
No. You can take out the policy without an NIE, and pay by credit card or bank transfer if you haven't opened a Spanish account yet. Direct debit from a Spanish IBAN is only one of the three options.
How long does the certificate take?
The policy is released within 24 to 48 hours and the embassy certificate is issued from that moment. Counting the quote and the application, allow 3 to 5 working days from the time you send us your documents.
What do I need to send to get a quote?
Three things: a copy of your passport, the acceptance letter from your university or institution, and the date you want the policy to start.
Is the health questionnaire available in English?
Yes. We have the application and the health declaration in both Spanish and English, so you can complete it in whichever language you're comfortable with.
What if I have a pre-existing condition?
In most cases it doesn't prevent you from taking out the policy. What matters is declaring it: an inaccurate health declaration can lead the insurer to reduce or reject a future claim. Tell us and we'll assess it before anything is issued.
Does the policy cover repatriation?
A study visa is not a travel visa, and several consulates state expressly that repatriation is not required. The policy includes medical assistance while travelling abroad. Send us your case and we'll go through your consulate's requirement sheet with you.
What happens if my visa is refused?
Tell us as soon as you know and we'll look at your case with Allianz before the policy takes effect. That's why it's worth setting the start date carefully in step 1.
What happens when I finish my studies and stay to work in Spain?
Your policy renews and stays with you, with the seniority you've built up and without repeating the health questionnaire. That's one of the differences from temporary student policies, which expire and force you to start from scratch.
Can I insure my partner or my children too?
Yes. It can be arranged as a family group, with each insured person's premium based on their age. Mention it when you ask for a quote and we'll prepare the combined calculation.
How much does student visa health insurance cost?
It depends on your age. The 5 to 19 band starts at €46/month and the 20 to 44 band is €69/month, on the no-co-payment plan with primary care and dental included. Paying annually carries a 3% discount.
How do I check that Allianz is authorised in Spain?
You can look it up in the public register of insurers held by the Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones, on the Ministry of Economy website. It is the same register your consulate's requirement sheet refers to.
