Which insurance is compulsory in Spain?
Compulsory
Third-party liability is required by law for every vehicle registered in Spain. Most expats add glass, theft and roadside assistance, or go fully comprehensive.
Compulsory
The same legal minimum as any car. Worth adding: battery damage, charging-cable theft and roadside recharging.
Compulsory
Third-party liability is mandatory for motorbikes of any engine size. Theft cover and personal accident cover for the rider are strongly advised.
Compulsory since 2026
Law 5/2025 has required third-party liability insurance for e-scooters and other personal mobility vehicles since 2 January 2026. Compliant pedal-assist e-bikes are exempt.
Compulsory
Required third-party cover, plus protection for fitted equipment and international roadside assistance for trips around Europe.
Compulsory
Required third-party cover, plus specialist protection for the living area and assistance able to recover heavy vehicles.
Compulsory for most boats
Royal Decree 607/1999 requires third-party liability for motor-powered recreational boats and jet skis, and for sailing boats over 6 metres long.
Compulsory
Spain’s Animal Welfare Law (Ley 7/2023) requires dog owners to have third-party liability insurance. Potentially dangerous breeds (PPP) also need a certificate for their licence.
Required for most visas
Private health cover from an insurer authorised in Spain is required for non-lucrative, digital nomad and student visas — usually with no co-payments and no waiting periods.
Required for Schengen visas
Relatives visiting from outside the EU usually need Schengen travel insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover. For your own trips, it covers medical costs and cancellations.
Required with a mortgage
Not compulsory by law, but your bank will require buildings cover if you have a mortgage — and cannot force you to buy its own policy. Holiday lets need specific cover.
Optional
Not compulsory, although banks often ask for it with a mortgage. It gives your family money while a Spanish inheritance is being settled.
Optional
Not compulsory, but very common in Spain: it organises and pays for the funeral and the paperwork, with repatriation options for foreign residents.
