Insuring goods in transit from Spain: four things to know
Configure your goods in transit insurance
Exporters and logistics businesses need protection that goes well beyond the low per-kilo compensation set by Spanish (LOTT) and international (CMR) transport law. Use our interactive tool to structure your policy, whether you own the goods and want to cover their full value, or you’re a haulier who needs to protect your liability to customers.
FAQs
Goods in transit insurance: frequently asked questions
Is insuring the truck different from insuring the goods?
Yes, completely. Truck insurance covers the vehicle itself and third-party liability on the road. It doesn't cover the value of what's inside. To protect the pallets or containers you carry, you need a specific goods in transit policy.
I export fresh produce to Germany. Am I covered if it arrives spoiled?
Yes, if you include broken cold chain cover. The policy pays for the loss if an expert can show the spoilage was caused by a prolonged mechanical breakdown of the refrigeration unit, not by natural ripening or a border delay.
I'm the seller. Do I have to insure the sea shipment?
It depends on the Incoterm agreed in your international sales contract. Under CIF or CIP, for example, the seller must take out and pay for the marine insurance in favour of the foreign buyer.
What is an open (floating) policy?
It suits regular exporters: instead of insuring each container separately, you sign an annual contract with a fixed rate. Each month you report the shipments actually made and are charged only for the goods you moved.
Is a pallet dropped by the forklift while loading covered?
Yes. Our policy covers the whole logistics cycle, including loading, unloading and stowage, protecting goods against falls, overturning or breakage at the origin or destination dock.
If the driver stops overnight and the load is stolen, does the policy pay?
Theft cover includes robbery and forced entry into the trailer, but the truck must have been parked overnight in a guarded or enclosed car park or an authorised service area, not on open ground.
I'm a self-employed haulier and the goods aren't mine. Do I need cargo insurance?
You need haulier's liability cover (CMR or LOTT). If you have an accident and damage your client's goods, the law makes you liable per kilo lost, and the policy pays that compensation so your own assets aren't at risk.
I transport jewellery or precious metals. Does the standard policy work?
No. Very high-value goods such as jewellery, gold, cash, art or antiques are excluded from general policies and need an individual risk assessment, exact declared values and strict security measures.
Does the policy pay if a port strike delays delivery?
Generally not. Goods in transit insurance covers physical damage, loss and theft. Indirect losses from delays, strikes, port stoppages or lost market share are usually excluded.
I import containers from Asia. What is general average?
An old maritime rule: if a ship faces an emergency and the master orders containers to be jettisoned to save it, all owners of the surviving cargo must share the losses proportionally. Our policy pays your share.
