FAQs

Sick pay insurance: frequently asked questions

Do I need a medical examination to take it out?
No. Sick pay insurance by fixed schedule is taken out with a short health questionnaire, with no medical examinations or blood tests before signing.
If the schedule says 15 days but I recover in 10, do I have to pay anything back?
No, that's the advantage of the schedule system. Allianz pays the full amount for the days set in the official schedule as soon as you present the initial diagnosis. If you recover sooner and go back to work, you keep the rest.
Do I have to wait to be signed back to work before I'm paid?
No. With the schedule system, Allianz pays the full benefit into your bank account a few days after you present the initial sick note with the diagnosis, so you have cash to pay your suppliers.
Is there a waiting period?
There's no waiting period for sick leave caused by an accident. For illness, a waiting period of 60 days from the start of the policy applies.
I'm a plumber and I break a finger; an office worker with the same injury could still type. Are we paid the same?
No. The Allianz schedule is adjusted to your declared profession, so a manual trade such as a plumber or a driver is paid more days for a bone or muscle injury than an office worker.
If Social Security or my mutual insurer already pays me, does Allianz pay too?
Yes. Private sick pay is fully compatible with and independent of Social Security benefits: you receive your public benefit and, separately, the full amount set in your Allianz policy.
What if I relapse with the same illness later?
It depends on the timing. If you relapse with the same condition shortly after being signed back to work (usually within 6 months), it's treated as the same period of leave and cover resumes if you hadn't used up the maximum days. After a longer period, it's a new claim.
Are weekends and bank holidays included?
Yes. The schedule pays calendar days: if your injury is set at 30 days and you chose €50 a day, you receive €1,500, whether or not there are weekends or holidays in that period.
Does it cover long leave for depression or burnout?
Sick pay policies usually have significant exclusions for psychiatric conditions because they're hard to assess objectively. Ask us, as the higher plans may include limited cover, for example for emergency psychiatric hospitalisation.
What if the illness is very serious and the schedule days fall short?
For serious conditions that need long hospital stays or major surgery, the higher Allianz plans include a surgical benefit (a one-off payment of several thousand euros depending on the operation) and extended convalescence cover for long recoveries.
