Is home insurance compulsory in Spain?

Not by law for homeowners. However, if you buy with a Spanish mortgage, the bank will require buildings insurance for as long as the loan is outstanding. Since Law 5/2019, the bank cannot force you to take out its own policy: you can insure with Allianz through us, as long as the cover meets the bank's conditions.

Can I insure a second home I only use part of the year?

Yes. Our plans are suitable for main residences, second homes, rental properties and holiday rentals. Tell us how often the home is empty so we can recommend the right plan; squatter protection is included in every plan, which is especially useful for homes that stand empty for long periods.

Does home insurance cover squatters (okupas)?

Yes. Every plan includes squatter protection, with specialist legal defence and eviction support to help you recover your home as quickly as possible.

What is the difference between buildings (continente) and contents (contenido)?

The building is the structure: walls, floors, roof, fixed installations and fitted kitchens and bathrooms. Contents are your belongings: furniture, appliances, clothes, electronics and valuables. Insure the building for its rebuild cost and the contents for their real value; if either is underinsured, claims are paid in proportion.

What is an excess (franquicia)?

The excess is the part of each claim that you pay yourself. Our Basic with excess plan has a lower premium in exchange for an excess on claims; the Basic plan offers the same cover with no excess.

Who pays for flood damage after a DANA storm?

Extraordinary events such as floods from a DANA, earthquakes or severe storms are covered by the state-backed Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, which pays through your home insurance. Ordinary rain, hail or wind damage is covered by the natural events cover in your Allianz plan. We help you file either type of claim.

Will my policy documents be in English?

Allianz issues policy documents in Spanish, as required in Spain. We explain every clause to you in English before you sign, and handle your renewals and claims in English too.

How do renewals and cancellations work?

Home insurance policies in Spain are annual and renew automatically. If you want to cancel, you must notify the insurer in writing at least one month before the renewal date. If you are switching from another insurer, we can check your current policy's dates and help you with the notice.
