Dog insurance in Spain: frequently asked questions
Is liability insurance really compulsory for my dog in Spain?
Yes. Spain's Animal Welfare Law (Law 7/2023) requires every dog owner to have third-party liability insurance, whatever the dog's size, weight or breed. It no longer applies only to potentially dangerous breeds (PPP). Our policy covers up to €300,000.
What happens if I walk my dog without insurance?
Local police and the Guardia Civil's SEPRONA can ask for proof of insurance. Under Law 7/2023, failing to comply can lead to fines that start at €500 for minor offences, depending on the offence and local by-laws.
My dog is a potentially dangerous breed (PPP). Can you insure it?
In most cases, yes. We insure breeds such as Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino and American Staffordshire, and issue the PPP liability certificate your town hall asks for before granting your dog licence. We assess each application individually.
My dog came with me from the UK or another country. Can I insure it here?
Yes. Your dog needs to be microchipped and registered in your name in the Spanish regional animal register, with up-to-date vaccinations. Once that's done, we can insure it straight away, and we can point you to what you need if your dog is still registered abroad.
How does the partner vet network work?
With the vet network plan, you can use Allianz partner vet clinics and hospitals in Murcia and across Spain. The first consultation for each condition is free, and further treatment is offered at discounted prices.
Can I use the vet video call app for small problems?
Yes, as often as you like, with no extra charge. It's perfect for the “do I need to rush to the emergency vet or not?” moments: chat or video call a registered vet 24 hours a day, weekends included, and show them the wound or symptoms on camera.
What happens if my dog bites another dog or a person?
Your third-party liability cover pays the compensation to the victim, whether your dog bites someone, runs off and causes a cyclist to fall, or injures another dog, and it covers your legal defence if the case goes to court.
What do I need to insure my dog with you?
Your dog must be identified with an official microchip registered in your name in the public register, and have its vaccinations and deworming up to date in its health booklet or pet passport, as required by the regional authorities.
From what age can I insure a puppy?
As soon as it has its microchip, usually from around three months old, and the basic paperwork from the vet. That way it's covered during its most mischievous stage.
Am I covered if I travel with my dog outside Spain?
Yes. The liability cover automatically extends to the European Union and the United Kingdom, and our team can advise you on the EU pet passport, quarantine rules and airline requirements.
