Boat insurance in Spain: frequently asked questions
Is boat insurance compulsory in Spain?
Yes. Under Royal Decree 607/1999, all motor-powered pleasure boats (including jet skis) and sailing boats longer than 6 metres must have third-party liability insurance. Without it you can be fined by the Guardia Civil or the Harbour Master, and marinas won't let you moor.
What if my engine fails and I need towing at sea?
With marine assistance cover, Allianz pays the bill from Salvamento Marítimo or a private towing company for bringing your boat to the nearest repair port, keeping your crew safe.
What is wreck removal cover?
If your boat sinks in a channel or in port, obstructing other boats or causing pollution, the authorities will require you to remove it. Wreck removal pays the high cost of the specialist company that raises it.
Can I insure my sailing boat or yacht against own damage?
Yes, with the Plus plan. Under Spanish or English conditions, we cover particular average: whether your hull scrapes a reef, your mast or sails are damaged in a storm, or your propeller hits a floating object, the policy pays the boatyard bills.
Are my passengers covered if they're injured on board?
Yes. The policy includes accident cover for people on board and for water-skiers you tow. If someone is injured in rough seas, or a swimmer is hit, the insurer pays medical costs and the agreed compensation.
My boat is moored in port over the winter. Is theft or vandalism covered?
Yes. With theft and vandalism cover you're compensated for the theft of the whole boat and for partial theft, such as the outboard engine, sounder, GPS and radio equipment.
Am I covered if I take part in amateur regattas?
Not with the standard policy, because racing increases the risk of collision. We can add a specific endorsement to your Allianz policy so you can race insured and meet federation rules.
Is the policy valid if I sail outside Spain?
The basic liability cover applies in EU jurisdictional waters and the Mediterranean, including crossings to the Balearics. If your boat is ocean-going and you plan longer passages, we adapt your policy internationally.
Who pays if I damage the pontoon or another boat while mooring?
Your liability cover pays for damage to port facilities, such as pontoons, water or power points, and for damage to the neighbouring boat.
